JESUS WAS BURIED
Keywords 15:34
And at the ninth hour
Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"-
-which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
1. Jesus died (33-41)
As Jesus was dying
on the cross, the sky was darkened for three hours. Then Jesus cried out, “My God, why have you forsaken me?” Jesus was the Son of God. But as a man he had become the sin
offering for the entire world. He died in this way so that men might know God
has not forsaken us. The men near the cross thought he was calling Elijah to
help him. Jesus breathed his last. The centurion who saw it testified, “Surely this man was the Son of God!” Jesus’ death was in
obedience to God’s will. It was his
victory over the power of death, and it is our victory when we believe in him.
2. Joseph’s new tomb (42-47)
Jesus was not a
superhero. He died quickly due to the terrible beatings and his broken heart.
But his death inspired Joseph of Arimathea to openly declare his faith in him.
He sought permission from Pilate to bury Jesus’ dead body in his own tomb. He wrapped the body in linens and
covered the tomb with a large rock. Jesus was buried in honor.
Prayer Lord Jesus, you experienced the darkness of death so that I
might believe in your love.
One Word Jesus was forsaken instead of us
