Luke 4:1-13 / Keywords 4:4
THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS
1.
Man does not live on bread alone (1-4)
Jesus was ready to
begin his mission life. The Holy Spirit led him into the desert
where he fasted and
prayed. Jesus was tired and hungry. Satan tempted him to
use his power to make
bread. Jesus knew who he was and what he must do and
say (whether tired or
hungry): “Man does not live on bread alone” (4).
2.
Worship the Lord your God only (5-8)
Satan promised Jesus
all the authority and splendor of worldly kingdoms. It
could be
intoxicating. But Jesus did not come to have worldly authority and glory.
He came to be the
Savior through the cross and suffering. He was clear: “Worship
the Lord your God and
serve him only” (8).
3.
Don’t
test God (9-13)
Satan wised up and
used Scripture to tempt Jesus. He coaxed Jesus to test
God’s love and power in a
rash way. Jesus trusted God. He said, “Do not put the
Lord your God to the
test” (12).
Prayer
Lord, your word has
power to overcome all temptation. Strengthen me in
your word. Use me to
serve you only in your redemptive work.
One
Word Overcome temptation
with the word of God
