JESUS EXPLAINS JOHN’S MISSION
Keywords
11:11
I tell you
the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than
John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than
he.
1. Jesus reassures
John’s
disciples (11:1-6)
From
prison, John the Baptist sent his disciples to Jesus to ask him if he was the
promised Messiah. Even someone as great as John can fall into doubt. Jesus told
John’s disciples to observe the work of God going on
through him and decide. Jesus let his actions speak for themselves. The work of
God comes with persecution, but we can avoid falling away when we focus on the
good things Jesus is doing among us.
2. Jesus addresses the crowd (11:7-19)
Jesus
challenged the crowd about their response to John. John the Baptist was the
greatest of God’s human
servants; yet he did not exist for himself, but to point the way to Jesus. It’s better to enter the Kingdom of Heaven through Jesus
than to be like John the Baptist. Jesus’ style of ministry was different from John’s, but people who were not willing to repent
criticized both of them. God can use all kinds of people to teach his wisdom;
the important thing is that we come to Jesus.
Prayer Heavenly
Father, help me overcome my discouragement by looking at the work of God going
on today.
One Word See God’s good work
