JESUS HEALS THE BLIND AND MUTE
Keywords 9:30a, 33a
30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly…33 And when
the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke.
1. Two blind men receive
sight (27-31)
As news of Jesus’ healing spread far and wide, people came to know who Jesus is.
These blind men called him, “Son of David,” a messianic title. Based on their faith in him as the Lord,
Jesus restored their sight. They were blind, but they saw who Jesus truly is.
2. The mute speak (32-34)
As the blind men
left, a demon-possessed man who was mute was brought to Jesus. Jesus drove out
the demon and the man spoke. Perhaps he thanked Jesus and praised God. People
were amazed, saying, “Nothing like this
has ever been seen in Israel.” Isaiah had
prophesied that the Messiah would heal the blind and mute (Isa 35:5-6), and now
these very things were happening. The Messiah had come among them! The religious
leaders called him the prince of demons. They saw the same things as others,
but their eyes were closed, and their mouths full of reviling. Rejecting Jesus
left them worse than the blind and the mute.
Prayer Father, thank you for Jesus who brings joy and healing. Open my
eyes to see him as my Christ, and my mouth to declare his praises.
One Word Jesus is the Messiah
