BECAUSE YOU HAVE FORSAKEN THE LORD
Keywords 24:20b
"This is what God says:
'Why do you disobey the LORD's commands? You will not prosper. Because you have
forsaken the LORD, he has forsaken you.' "
1. Judah forsakes the LORD (15-22)
God blessed
Jehoiada with a long life and he was given an honourable burial with the kings
of the City of David. Unfortunately, this was when King Joash’s reign took a
dramatic turn for the worse. He listened to the wrong people and allowed
idolatry to become entrenched in the nation again. The people abandoned the
temple of the LORD and refused to listen to the warnings of the prophets.
Jehoiada’s own son Zechariah prophesied against the wickedness of the people,
declaring that because they had forsaken the LORD, he would forsake them. By
King Joash’s order, he was stoned to death in the temple courts.
2. God’s judgment
upon Joash (23-27)
The LORD executed
his righteous judgment on Joash, and Judah’s army was defeated by a much
smaller Aramean army. They invaded Judah and Jerusalem and killed the leaders
of the people. Joash himself was wounded, and several of his officials killed
him while he was lying on his bed. He was not buried in the tombs of the kings.
Prayer Lord, we listen to
you, not the world.
One Word Only the obedient will prosper
