1. Is
godliness a means to financial gain? (3-8)
Instructions
for God’s household lead to Jesus and godly teaching. This builds up God’s
family and brings glory to him. Some taught different things that spread
controversy and strife. They thought that godliness was a means to financial
gain. Everything was evaluated with a business mindset. But godliness with
contentment is great gain. When we see our lives from an eternal perspective,
simply having food and clothes for today is enough. Our true riches are in
heaven, and they are lavish.
2. Love
of money: a root of all kinds of evil (9-10)
Desiring to
get rich is the way to fall into Satan’s trap. This leads to foolish and
harmful appetites that plunge people into ruin and destruction. Sadly, even
members of the church at times love money and are drawn away from the faith.
Grief follows.
Prayer Father, help me to pursue godliness
and be content in you. Protect me from the love of money.
