THE GOAL OF THIS COMMAND IS LOVE
Keywords 1:5
The goal of this command is love, which comes
from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
1. Command people not to teach false doctrine
(1-5)
Paul’s relationship with Timothy was based on his
authority as an apostle by the command of God and Christ, but also on love,
like the love of a father to his son. Paul’s direction was clear: command
certain people not to teach false doctrines or devote themselves to myths and
endless genealogies, which promote controversies rather than advance God’s
work. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart, good
conscience, and sincere faith. With these three things, Timothy’s command in
love will protect God’s church from false doctrines.
2. The law is good if one uses it properly
(6-11)
Those who don’t have a pure heart, good conscience, and
sincere faith resort to meaningless talk. They take advantage of the law for
their own purposes, claiming to be teachers. The law has a good purpose when it
is used properly. It exposes what is contrary to the sound doctrine that
conforms to the gospel. This convicts sinners to turn to Jesus.
Prayer Father, help me to have a
pure heart, good conscience, and sincere faith as I serve you today.
One Word Command in love
