JOY IN ISRAEL
Keywords
12:40
Also,
their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali came
bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules and oxen. There were plentiful supplies
of flour, fig cakes, raisin cakes, wine, oil, cattle and sheep, for there was
joy in Israel.
1.
Support from all the tribes (23-27)
The list of those who
came to David to support his kingship includes every tribe
of Israel. The men
from Issachar were described as “men who understood the
times and knew what
Israel should do.” They had God’s vision for their
nation. The
men from Zebulun came
“to help David with
undivided loyalty.” In the same way,
the remnant in
Jerusalem should have God’s vision for their people and be unifi ed
in support of their
king.
2.
Fellowship and joy (38-40)
The men volunteered
their service and were fully determined to make David
king over all Israel.
The rest of Israel was of one mind to make David king as well.
They brought with
them a bountiful supply of food as they enjoyed fellowship with
David and each other.
Verse 40b sums it up: “for there was joy in Israel.” This is a
foretaste of the
future joy when the Messiah comes to be with all God’s people.
