I AM IN THE FATHER AND THE FATHER IS IN ME

John 14:7-14 / Keywords 14:11

Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.

14:7 If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Footnotes

b. John 14:7 Some manuscripts If you really knew me, you would know

1. To see clearly that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life is to truly know Jesus. To know or see who Jesus really is to know or see the Father. But even the disciples did not fully grasp the deity of Jesus. So Philip asked him to show the Father. Jesus reiterated: to see him is to see the Father. He is in the Father and the Father in him. Jesus’ words and works are the words and works of the Father. The Father has fully revealed himself in his Son (10-11). Jesus is God who became flesh and lived among us and died for our sins so that we might be saved.

2. If we have true faith in Jesus, then we will do great works by the power of the Holy Spirit whom Jesus sent after his ascension. Jesus also promised, “I will do whatever you ask in my name…you may ask anything in my name, and I will do it” so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. We have a great privilege to participate in the “greater” works flowing from the finished work of Christ on the cross as well as in fruitful prayer. This is the power of living faith May we take the gospel to the ends of the earth and pass it down from generation to generation.

Prayer Father, thank you for revealing yourself in and through Jesus the Messiah. Help me to have absolute faith in Christ and his finished work on the cross to bring the gospel to the lost in our time. Thank you for your promise to answer my prayers.

One Word Jesus is God Incarnate
