Footnotes
a. Psalm 136:13 Or the Sea of Reeds; also in verse 15
1. In this Psalm the writer encourages God’s people to give thanks to God for his love. The nature of God’s love is that it is eternal and unfailing. By his love, God rules all
things. God is the creator and ruler of heaven and earth. Genesis 1 reveals God
who created everything out of nothing. He is unfathomable in his almighty
power, but he is not an impersonal God. He is a God of love, and his love
endures forever.
2. Although God demonstrated his power often, he also
revealed his merciful love. God expressed his love to the people of Israel by
delivering them from Egypt and from Pharaoh. Then for forty years, he was with
his people in the desert, bearing their rejection on himself. God’s love endured while overcoming their sin. He did not fail to lead them to
the land he had promised them; he gave it to them as their inheritance. He is
the God of heaven and the God who sustains his people in love.
Prayer Lord, you are the almighty ruler of all things. Thank you for loving a
sinner like me. Make me a testimony of your enduring love.
One Word Give thanks for God’s enduring love
