WHERE DOES MY HELP COME FROM?
Psalm
121:1-8 / Keywords 121:2
My help comes from
the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
A song of ascents.
121:1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
1. I lift up my eyes to the hills (1-2). This is
sometimes called the traveler’s psalm. As we pilgrims travel toward the heavenly
kingdom, we encounter unknown paths and hostile environments. Familiar places
and people pass from sight. We cannot put our trust in people or in material
things. Our help cannot come from the hills, but the hills remind us of our
Creator, the Eternal God who made heaven and earth. He is our only source of
help.
2. The Lord watches over us (3-8). The Lord is on 24-hour
duty. He does not sleep; he watches over us all the time. No one can be such a
shepherd. The Lord knows my weaknesses, and he keeps my foot from slipping. He
knows that I travel through a hostile world, so he protects me from the sun by
day and the moon by night. My life is in his hand until I reach my final
destination – his heavenly kingdom.
Prayer Lord, I lift my eyes to the hills. My help comes from you, Lord.
One Word My help comes from the Lord
