REMEMBERING GOD’S WONDERS
Psalm 111:1-10 / Keywords 111:2
Great
are the works of the LORD; they are pondered by all who delight in them.
Psalm 111[a]
111:1 Praise the Lord.[b]
I will extol the Lord with all my heart
in the council of the upright and in the assembly.
2 Great are the works of the Lord;
they are pondered by all who delight in them.
3 Glorious and majestic are his deeds,
and his righteousness endures forever.
4 He has caused his wonders to be remembered;
the Lord is gracious and compassionate.
5 He provides food for those who fear him;
he remembers his covenant forever.
6 He has shown his people the power of his works,
giving them the lands of other nations.
7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;
all his precepts are trustworthy.
8 They are established for ever and ever,
enacted in faithfulness and uprightness.
9 He provided redemption for his people;
he ordained his covenant forever—
holy and awesome is his name.
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
all who follow his precepts have good understanding.
To him belongs eternal praise.
Footnotes
a. Psalm 111:1 This psalm is an acrostic poem, the lines of which begin with the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet.
b. Psalm 111:1 Hebrew Hallelu Yah
1.
The Psalmist composed this hymn of praise to be read or sung in the assembly of
God’s
people, to help them ponder his goodness (1-2). The Psalm then lists the
blessings God gives his people, from the least to the greatest. He provides for
our physical needs (5). To make us know his power and goodness, he gives us
possessions that we did not earn (6). He also gave us the precepts of his word,
which are trustworthy for building our lives on and will never pass away (7-8).
Last and greatest of all, he provided redemption for us through the new
covenant, which was established when Jesus shed his blood for us (9). This
covenant can never be broken.
2.
If we also meditate on these things, then we will become wise and have good
understanding (10). Perhaps today is a good day to make our own list of the
good things we remember about God.
Prayer Lord, thank you for the joy that we
have just to remember and think about all you have done. Thank you for your
provision for our lives until now and your salvation for us in Jesus.
One Word Ponder and delight in God’s works
