FAITH THAT LEADS TO GODLINESS

Titus 1:1-16 / Keywords 1:1

Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God's elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness--

1. Godliness is the main theme of Pauls letter to Titus. Paul, an apostle and bondservant of Christ, had a clear mission to further the faith of Gods people and their personal knowledge of God. Such faith and knowledge lead to a godly life that is based on the promises of God and the hope of eternal life. Paul viewed Titus as a true son and mentored him in the faith they shared. Their wonderful relationship was to be echoed throughout the church. The church desperately needed mentors and overseers, so Paul directed Titus to appoint elders in every town. The men Titus selected were to have godly characters and an excellent standing before both God and man. They were to love what is good and hold firm to the word of God so that they could encourage sound doctrine and refute false teaching.

2. The need for godly influence in the church was clear. Paul commanded Titus to silence the rebellious people who were disrupting households with their false teaching. He was also told to rebuke the people so that they would be sound in faith. Many were seeking godliness by following Jewish myths and man-made laws. Such legalism does not produce godliness. Instead, it denies the grace of God, which is the true source of godliness.

Prayer Father, we pray for a godliness that flows from faith. Raise up leaders who will glorify you.

One Word Godliness comes from faith
