Deuteronomy 8:1-20

MAN DOES NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE

Keywords 8:3

He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.

1. But live on every word of God (1-5)

God told the Israelites to be careful to follow all his commands. Why? So that

they may live and increase in number and take possession of the Promised Land.

For this, he disciplined the Israelites in the wilderness for 40 years. He humbled

them and tested their hearts until they learned that man does not live on bread

alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. God taught that

he alone is LORD through feeding them with manna. Their feet never tired, their

sandals never wore out with their LORD.

2. Remember the LORD your God (6-20)

But the real danger comes after God blesses them abundantly. Men easily forget

God and say proudly, “my power and the strength of my hands have produced

this wealth for me.” But we should remember the LORD God who gave the ability

to produce all. If we forget him and follow other gods, we will surely be destroyed

for disobeying God.

Prayer Lord, help me to live on your word. Let me remember you in the midst of

your blessings.

One Word Man does not live on bread alone but on the word of God.
