DAVID BECOMES KING OVER ISRAEL
Keywords 11:3
When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, he made
a compact with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king
over Israel, as the LORD had promised through Samuel.
1. David is made king (1-3)
The people of Israel were unified
in their support for David. They had good
reasons for making David their
king - he was their flesh and blood and he was a
victorious military leader.
However, the greatest reason for making him king was
God’s promise: “You will shepherd my people Israel,
and you will become their
ruler.” The elders of
Israel anointed him king in Hebron, fulfilling the word of God.
2. The Lord was with David (4-9)
Although the Jebusites said to
David, “You
will not get in here”, David captured
the fortress of Zion and it
became known as the “City
of David”. This shows that
we shouldn’t be deceived by our enemies! David took residence in
the fortress
and built up the city around it,
from the terraces to the surrounding wall. Joab in
turn restored the rest of the
city. Verse 9 says, “David
became more and more
powerful, because the LORD Almighty
was with him.” In
the same way, God was
with the remnant in Jerusalem and
they were to put their trust in Him.
Prayer Lord, help us to live
according to your promises.
One Word Our
victory is in the Lord!
